Cincinnati Rollergirls announcer Caesar previews this Saturday’s double-header at the Cincinnati Gardens, which pits Cincinnati’s Black Sheep against Minnesota’s North Star Roller Girls and Cincinnati’s Silent Lambs against Dayton’s Gem City Rollergirls during CRG’s first-ever College Night.
#4 CINCINNATI BLACK SHEEP (6-1) VS. #6 NORTH STAR SUPERNOVAS (1-1) (WFTDA North Central Region rankings)
When we last saw the Sheep in action, they were busy dismantling the up-and-coming Chicago Outfit Syndicate. In that game, the visitors from the Windy City held their one and only lead after the first jam, which went 1-0 in their favor. After that, it was all Cincinnati. That win now looks more impressive, and the Syndicate have since gone on to win against Tampa Bay last weekend, a Women’s Flat Track Derby Association team ranked #7 in the South Central region. This Saturday, another regionally and nationally ranked opponent comes to the Gardens to try and knock the Black Sheep off of their current 6-game win streak (the Black Sheep are undefeated in WFTDA play this season).
The visiting North Star Supernovas from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota could be the toughest opponent the Black Sheep have faced since San Diego came to town for the season opener. Although North Star lost by nearly 100 points in their last game, that was to the #1 Windy City Rollers. Prior to that, they defeated a solid Sioux Falls team by almost 200 points. Despite being relatively new to the WFTDA, North Star has become a smart team that is quick to adjust to opponent’s strategy. Derby News Network ranks the Supernovas #24 in the nation (Cincinnati has inexplicably fallen from #16 to #19 in the recent DNN rankings, despite their winning streak).
North Star’s biggest weapon skates under the name Jawbreaker. A former Minnesota RollerGirl, Jawbreaker is widely know in the derby world and plays for the national all-star team, Team Awesome, which also includes Cincinnati’s Sadistic Sadie. Much like Sadistic Sadie, Jawbreaker is a standout player as both a blocker and a jammer. She is truly a superstar among Supernovas. Katarina Hit and Medusa are also stand out jammers who will put up a lot of points on the Cincinnati defense if the Sheep get caught out at pasture.
Still, it’s hard to envision North Star escaping with a win in this one, given how good the Black Sheep have been playing in recent games. As usual, jammer penalties and smart pack matchups will be the key to the game. If North Star can keep its best players out of the box and avoid mismatches on the line, they may upset their North Central Regional rivals. Cincinnati’s top two scorers for the season are back for this game, well-rested and healthy. You can bet K Lethal and Hannah Ouchocinco are gonna play fired up after all that time off.
CINCINNATI BLACK SHEEP: 33 Buckhead Betty // 15 Dr. McDerby // 85 Hannah Ouchocinco // 21 June with a Cleaver // 83 Jungle Lacy // 18 K Lethal // 3 Karma Krash // 86 Nuk’em // 4 Killian Destroy // 44 MIRDERHER // 76 Sadistic Sadie // 69 Sk8 Crime // 11 Sk8r-Kinney // 5 Trauma

CINCINNATI SILENT LAMBS VS. GEM CITY HARLEY’S ANGELS
The Silent Lambs are fresh off of back-to-back wins, most recently a sound defeat of the Chicago Outfit’s Shade Brigade at home on May 8. They are now at 3-1 on the season and hope to improve this Saturday over in-state rivals Gem City. Several current Cincinnati players got started in Dayton as Gem City Rollergirls, and the visiting Harley’s Angels feature a former Cincinnati player on their roster. This adds is an interesting storyline to this matchup.
Gem City is a long time member of the WFTDA, but success on the track has been elusive for them in recent years. They have gone through successive rebuilding attempts over the past few years and have recently re-emerged with a new look and new players. The Cincinnati Silent Lambs, on the other hand, have benefited from consistency in their roster and coaching staff. As such, the collective experience and talent of the Silent Lambs far surpasses that of Gem City, and this looks like another solid win for the home team.
The Harley’s Angels’ best all-around player is team captain Racey Rocker. She will likely do much of the jamming, but she is also a solid blocker. For the home team, Michele D’Bombya will make her season debut in this game. Celia Graves, Miss Print, and Poppy Chulo return to the roster as well. Hop Devil and Kitten Kicker will look to continue their impressive seasons, and Wheezy will continue to put up big numbers.
CINCINNATI SILENT LAMBS: 45 Bex Pistol // 12 Bombtrack // 79 Captain Painway // 6 Celia Graves // 0 Cherry Choke // 88 Diamond Kut-Her // 20 Geez Louise // 67 Hop Devil // 30 Kitten Kicker // M1A1 Maime // 62 Michele D’Bombya // 9.5pt Miss Print // 94 Nik Jagger // M16 Penni Pusha // 38 Pistol Whippin’ Wendy // 63 Polly Rocket // 43 Wheezy // 73 The Librarian // 27 Poppy Chulo
