The Cincinnati Rollergirls and Evansville, IN’s Demolition City Roller Derby will compete in their first WFTDA-sanctioned game at CRG’s third annual College Night, 7 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Cincinnati Gardens.
Although Saturday will mark the first time that Cincinnati and Demolition City’s A teams face each other on the flat track, the teams are no strangers to each other. Demolition City’s A team, the Dynamite Dolls, has twice defeated Cincinnati’s B team, the Violent Lambs: In Evansville in May 2011 (204-61) and at the Gardens in June 2010 (79-52).
Cincinnati’s Black Sheep, ranked 8th in WFTDA’s North Central Region, are heading into Saturday’s game with a 1-1 record. The No. 22 Dynamite Dolls are 2-1 on the season, with wins against Killamazoo and Charlotte and a loss to the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls, whom the Black Sheep narrowly defeated in February.
The Black Sheep will field a slightly different roster from the one that fell to the Arch Rival Roller Girls at Cincinnati’s March 10 home opener. Assistant coach and blocker Ruff’n the Passer is back on skates after an injury, but jammer Hannah Barbaric will sit out this game out after sustaining an injury at practice earlier this week. Making her first appearance on the Black Sheep roster is Sauci, a derby veteran who is in her first season with Cincinnati.
Saturday’s game is a must-win for the Black Sheep. If they lose, they tumble in the rankings and Demolition City leapfrogs toward the top. But if they win by a sizable margin, they prove they’re still a top-tier team in the region.
After two losses to the Dynamite Dolls, Cincinnati’s Violent Lambs will also be gunning for a win against Demolition City’s B team, the Destruction Dames, in the opening game of the night. Four Demolition City skaters are scheduled to skate in both games.
This game marks CRG’s third annual College Night. Fans who show college ID at the door to get general admission tickets for just $10, a savings of $2 off the normal door prices. The first 300 fans to show college ID at the door will also receive free CRG bottle openers.
