A long time ago, in a venue far, far away, the Cincinnati Rollergirls and Baltimore’s Charm City Roller Girls faced off for the first time at a 2008 tournament in Madison, Wisconsin called Derby in Dairyland.
Charm City took the win in that game, 158-83, and the teams haven’t played since. But on Saturday, April 27, they’ll finally meet again at the Cincinnati Rollergirls’ annual Star Wars Night at Schmidt Memorial Fieldhouse at Xavier University — and even Yoda himself might have trouble predicting the outcome of this game.
Although Charm City is currently higher-ranked than Cincinnati — 58th in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s official rankings, compared to Cincinnati’s 92 — those rankings don’t yet take into account games played this month. That’s worth noting because Charm City was defeated by Brandywine Roller Derby, 264-143, on April 13 — and Cincinnati beat Brandywine in March, 128-104.
Still, Flat Track Stats, which updates its own rankings as soon as it gets official scores, gives Charm City a 68% chance of winning this game. And Charm City, which has made multiple post-season playoff appearances throughout their history, isn’t a team that anyone should ever underestimate. Brandywine was only their first sanctioned game of this season, and they’ve no doubt already made adjustments since then.
By comparison, Cincinnati’s Black Sheep are now 1-4 on the season, after a heartbreaking 4-point loss to Steel City Roller Derby on April 6. The Sheep are hungry for a decisive win, and you can bet they’ll looking for it to come at the expense of Charm City.
In the B-team game, Cincinnati’s Violent Lambs likely will face a tough opponent in Charm City’s Female Trouble, who pulled off a monster 208-point win over the Brandywine Brawlers earlier this month (the Lambs beat the Brawlers by 112). But the Force has been strong with the 2-0 Lambs, so this is another matchup you won’t want to miss.
