Our Skater of the Week is someone you need to be on the lookout for – strong, quick, and strategic, Junie B. Bones, #33, is leaving her mark on the team, literally! A blocker who packs an absolute wallop, Bones’ infectious attitude and eagerness to learn and grow make her an incredible skater to have by your side.

How long have you been playing roller derby?
“This is my second season on the team.”

What do you do for your day job?
“I’m a reporter for the local public radio station.”

What is your volunteer role within the team?
“I help out with social media.”

What kind of skates do you roll on?
“Antiks.”

What’s your favorite position to play?
“Blocker! I love to get in the way!”

What is one of your derby strengths?
“I like to think I can take a hit pretty well.”

What made you want to play roller derby?
“I always thought it seemed like such a cool sport. And then I saw my former high school English teacher (Pain Austen!) posted about a boot camp opportunity to learn how to play. I was hooked on day one. Thank you Pain!”

If you had to pick a highlight from your derby career so far, what would it be?
“Playing my first game with CRG last year, beside all the people that taught me to skate. Felt like a full circle moment.”

What do you do for fun off the track?
“I like to read, crochet and lose at bar trivia.”

What would you say to someone who has thought about playing roller derby?
“Do it now! It can seem intimidating from the outside, but you’d be surprised about how quickly you get your feet under you and find people willing to help you be the best player you can be.”
